Burpee Wasn't Kidding -- Mammoth Sunflower

Stalks are 9 feet tall and still growing!

  1. Some years I have wonderful success with the giant sunflowers and other years not so much. That's a huge one! Have the squirrels started attacking it yet? They will climb up the stalk, making it bend over to the ground, then they will eat all the seeds out. It is actually pretty fun to watch.

  2. I'm hit or miss with most veggies and flowers on an annual basis. I guess the growing conditions are good for sunflowers this year! Now that the flowers are fully pollinated the weight of the seed head is definitely bending them downward. The seed heads are >12 inches wide and seriously heavy! I need to figure out how to dry out the seeds so we can eat some of them. Yum!
